Biography

Dr. Fouad El-Karnichi joins Sohar University as Assistant Professor in Translation Studies and Language Education, bringing with him a distinguished interdisciplinary profile spanning translation studies, language pedagogy, and educational technology. With academic and professional experience across the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and Canada, Dr. El-Karnichi integrates theoretical expertise with practical innovation in contemporary translation and language education.

Dr. El-Karnichi earned his Ph.D. in Education Sciences ( focus: Translator Education and Training) from the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, and an MSc in English Translation and Interpreting from Heriot-Watt University, UK. He further enhanced his expertise with a Certificate in Translation Methods from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and a TESOL Canada Diploma. A certified translator with the Order of Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters of Quebec (OTTIAQ), he maintains professional standing within the Canadian translation community.

Currently serving at Sohar University (2022–present), Dr. El-Karnichi develops and teaches innovative courses in Audiovisual Translation, Translation Technologies, Post-editing, TESOL, and Translation Studies. He leads internship initiatives and designs training programs in digital education and skill-based learning aligned with workforce development goals. His previous appointments include Saudi Electronic University, Sultan Qaboos University, Qatar University, King Khaled University, King Abdul Aziz University, and several Moroccan institutions, where he specialized in translation pedagogy, localisation, and e-learning integration.

Beyond academia, Dr. El-Karnichi has extensive industry engagement, including more than a decade of freelance and project-based translation experience, in-house translation work for the Qatar Red Cross and the Arab Organisation for Mining (AIDMO), and corporate positions at IBM UK. Since 2017, he has also served on a voluntary basis as Educational Program Director and Promoter for TESOL Canada in the Gulf and North Africa.

His research and scholarly contributions focus on translator education, experiential learning, reflective teaching practices, and the ethical integration of artificial intelligence in translation and multilingual education. He has collaborated on funded research projects, including a Qatar Foundation Fellowship. He has published in high-impact and Scopus-indexed journals such as Forum for Linguistic Studies, Cadernos de Tradução, Arab World English Journal for Translation and Literary Studies, and Teaching in Higher Education.

Dr. El-Karnichi is an active member of international academic communities and a frequent conference contributor, including the Sohar International Conference on Experiential Learning in Arab Higher Education (2024) and the Conference on AI-assisted Translation in National Security Contexts in Rabat, Morocco (2025). His diverse background, multilingual expertise, and dedication to bridging academia and industry contribute to the enrichment of the Faculty of Language Studies and the wider academic community.
