Prof. Habibullah Pathan
Biography
Prof. Habibullah Pathan is Professor (Research) in Applied Linguistics/TESOL at the Faculty of Language Studies, Sohar University, Sultanate of Oman, where he also serves as a Member of the University Research Committee (URC). In this role, he contributes to research governance, institutional research development, funding initiatives, international collaboration, and research capacity building. His academic work integrates research leadership, graduate supervision, curriculum development, innovation, and faculty mentoring.
He teaches courses in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Research Methodology, Academic Writing, and Language Education across undergraduate and postgraduate programs and supervises graduate research theses. He is actively engaged in mentoring emerging researchers in research design, scholarly publication, and academic writing, while promoting a sustainable research culture through workshops, collaborative initiatives, and structured mentorship programs.
Prof. Pathan’s current research interests include AI in Language Education, Technology-Enhanced Learning, Academic Writing, Corpus Linguistics, and Second Language Acquisition. He has successfully led and collaborated on nationally and internationally funded research projects, including projects supported by RUDN University and the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan under the U.S. Department of State. He has also contributed as a consultant to Higher Education Commission (HEC) funded research initiatives.
Before joining Sohar University, Prof. Pathan served as Professor and Director of the Centre of English Language and Linguistics at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, where he played a significant role in strengthening academic programs, enhancing research productivity, supporting faculty development, and expanding institutional research capacity.
He earned his PhD in Applied Linguistics/Language Education from the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom. As a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow, he worked as a postdoctoral research scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA under the mentorship of Noam Chomsky and completed leadership and nonprofit management training at the Questrom School of Business, Boston University, USA.
His scholarly contributions include publications in Q1 journals, keynote and plenary presentations at international conferences, editorial leadership, and peer-review activities. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of SAGE Open, has served as Guest Editor for the Russian Journal of Linguistics, and is a Board of Governors Member of the Linguistic Association of Pakistan. Prof. Pathan welcomes opportunities for international collaboration, research partnerships, consultancy.
