Dr Aladdin Al Zahran
Biography
Dr Aladdin Al Zahran has been a member of the Faculty of Language Studies at Sohar University since 28 August 2016. He joined the Faculty as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with effect from 1 September 2024. His teaching, research, and professional interests are in Interpreting and Translation Studies and Language Education.
Dr Al Zahran received his Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from Aleppo University, Syria. He subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting, with Distinction, at the University of Salford, United Kingdom, before earning a PhD in Interpreting Studies from the same institution. His doctoral research focused on intercultural mediation and the interpreter’s role as an intercultural mediator in conference interpreting settings, laying the foundation for his continuing research interests in interpreter-mediated communication, interpreting strategies, corpus-based translation and interpreting studies, and the translator’s and interpreter’s professional role.
From September 2018 to August 2023, Dr Al Zahran served as Program Coordinator for the BA in English Language and Translation. In this role, he contributed to curriculum development, academic program management, strategic and operational planning, and the implementation of quality assurance processes. His experience includes academic standards and accreditation, program review, student advising, and continuous quality enhancement initiatives. He has also served on Faculty and University committees, contributing to institutional planning and academic development. He also has experience in the evaluation and management of externally funded research grant projects, contributing to research quality, project oversight, and the effective administration of funded research initiatives.
Dr Al Zahran has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate level, delivering a broad range of theoretical and practical courses in interpreting, translation, language, and linguistics. He has supervised numerous Final Year Projects and has served as both an internal and external examiner for Master’s theses. In addition, he has experience as an external reviewer of academic program and has undertaken external examination duties, including pre- and post-moderation, for higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman.
Alongside his academic responsibilities, Dr Al Zahran has organized academic conferences and scholarly events, providing opportunities for researchers and practitioners to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration.
Dr Al Zahran maintains an active research profile. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus and other recognized academic databases, contributing to scholarship in Interpreting and Translation Studies. He also serves as a peer reviewer for international academic journals, providing independent evaluations of research manuscripts and supporting the scholarly publication process.
His research activities have attracted external funding. He was awarded a competitive research grant from The Research Council of Oman, Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, for the project entitled Improving Corpus Building and Terminology Extraction Process Using Semantic Leads. The project received funding of OMR 9,500 and focused on developing improved methods for corpus construction and terminology extraction to support translation and language research.
In addition to his academic work, Dr Al Zahran has substantial professional experience in the language services industry as a freelance interpreter, translator, translation reviser, external examiner, and translation consultant. These professional engagements enable him to maintain close links with professional practice while bringing current industry perspectives into his teaching and research.
Dr Al Zahran was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Teaching Award (2018–2019) in recognition of his contribution to teaching and student learning. Through his combined experience in teaching, research, academic leadership, quality assurance, program review, and professional practice, he continues to contribute to the advancement of Interpreting and Translation Studies and language education in higher education.
