Sohar University Launches Chair in Emerging Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies umbrella of UNESCO regional center for quality and excellence in education (RCQE)

Chair in Emerging Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies

In a landmark move that underscores its commitment to research, innovation, and sustainability, Sohar University has announced the establishment of the UNESCO RCQE Chair in Emerging Renewable and Sustainable Energy Emerging Technologies — the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman. The initiative is launched in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Center for Quality and Excellence in Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and was officially revealed during the university’s foundation-stone ceremony for the new Innovation Building.

This strategic initiative aligns with Sohar University’s five-year strategic plan (2023–2028) and Oman Vision 2040, both of which emphasize the transition toward a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy. The new UNESCO RCQE Chair aims to promote scientific research and innovation in clean energy technologies and sustainable development, while strengthening the national capacity to address pressing environmental and economic challenges.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Hamdan bin Sulaiman Al Fazari, Vice Chancellor of Sohar University, highlighted the university’s belief in partnership and collaboration as the cornerstone of impactful research and capacity building. He stated, “Sohar University recognizes that collaborative work is the path to creating greater scientific impact and stronger national capabilities. The establishment of this UNESCO RCQE Chair represents a pivotal milestone in advancing research excellence and supporting national efforts toward energy diversification and sustainability”.

The Chair will focus on advancing research in renewable and sustainable energy fields such as solar, wind, and green hydrogen, as well as emerging technologies in energy storage and industrial efficiency. It will also provide a dynamic platform for knowledge transfer, innovation, and entrepreneurship, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government sectors. Through this initiative, Sohar University seeks to empower researchers and students to develop practical solutions that contribute to sustainable energy transitions both locally and regionally.

The launch of the UNESCO RCQE Chair positions Sohar University as a regional hub for renewable energy research and innovation, reinforcing its role as a key player in supporting Oman’s sustainable development goals. This milestone also strengthens the university’s global partnerships, enhances its academic reputation, and contributes to building a new generation of Omani researchers and engineers equipped to lead the future of renewable and sustainable energy in the region.
