Sohar University has signed an agreement titled “Study on the Establishment of an Indian Studies Chair” with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), reflecting the mutual commitment of both parties to strengthening academic and cultural cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of India.
The agreement aims to examine the academic and institutional requirements for establishing an Indian Studies Chair at Sohar University, covering areas such as culture, history, arts, trade, and Omani–Indian relations. The initiative seeks to enhance cultural dialogue, academic exchange, and mutual understanding between the two countries.
This agreement builds on the deep historical ties between Oman and India, which span centuries of maritime and commercial exchange, as well as rich cultural and human interaction—forming a solid foundation for contemporary cooperation across multiple fields.
The initiative also coincides with the visit of the Prime Minister of the Republic of India to the Sultanate of Oman, highlighting the strength of bilateral relations and future prospects in trade, culture, arts, and economic development. Once established, the Indian Studies Chair is expected to further support this partnership through academic research, cultural programs, and strengthened collaboration between educational institutions.
Sohar University affirmed that this agreement aligns with its vision to expand international partnerships and reinforce its role as a platform for global academic dialogue—serving the local community while enhancing the University’s international presence, which has contributed to its recognition in the QS World University Rankings as the first private university in the Sultanate of Oman.
