A Project Utilizing Augmented Reality to Highlight Omani Heritage

Augmented Reality to Highlight Omani Heritage

As part of ongoing efforts to preserve Oman’s rich cultural heritage, students from Sohar University have developed an augmented reality (AR) application to revive lost heritage sites in Oman. The project also aims to use AR technology to provide insights into artifacts and displays in castles, forts, and museums.

The initiative creates immersive and interactive experiences, enabling visitors to explore historical tourist sites and learn about their history in an engaging and entertaining way through augmented reality.

The project is designed as a mobile app or smart glasses application linked to a cloud-based database. The app identifies the shape of objects through the camera, which requires storing the object’s shape in the database. Once identified, the app displays 3D models around the object or building and presents archaeological information in a captivating way. This dual approach enhances visitors’ education and interaction with Omani heritage.
