Sohar University and OQGN Launch Engineering Innovation Competition to Boost Efficiency and Sustainability in Energy Infrastructure

Sohar University and OQ Gas Networks SAOG (OQGN), the exclusive transporter and operator of the Sultanate of Oman’s natural gas transmission network, have announced the launch of the Engineering Innovation Competition. This initiative reflects both organizations’ commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation, as well as supporting national initiatives aimed at developing the energy sector and achieving sustainability.

The competition seeks to encourage students and graduates to propose innovative solutions and ideas that enhance safety, efficiency, sustainability, and digital transformation in gas networks, in line with national ambitions for a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and modern technologies. The competition covers areas including operational safety, sustainability, smart technologies and digital transformation, cybersecurity, gas network design research, as well as hydrogen transport and carbon capture.

The organizing committee has set February 22, 2026, as the opening date for registration, with June 22, 2026, as the deadline for submissions. The competition targets university students and graduates from Oman’s talented youth, offering cash prizes for the top three winners: OMR 1,500 for first place, OMR 1,000 for second, and OMR 500 for third.

Professor Ghassan Al Kindi, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Sohar University, said:

We believe that empowering students and graduates to work on real-world challenges enhances their capabilities and strengthens their role in developing innovative solutions that support sustainability and digital transformation in line with Oman Vision 2040.”

Both Sohar University and OQ Gas Networks emphasized that this initiative aligns with their vision of supporting the innovation ecosystem, strengthening partnerships between academia and industry, and enabling Omani youth to actively contribute to developing sustainable solutions that meet future needs.
