Sohar University is proud to announce the conclusion of a landmark research and consultancy project commissioned by the Chinese Institute of Education (CIE). The project culminated in the production of a scholarly book and a visually engaging video documentary titled “Oman-China Bi-Lateral Trade: Tracing the Cultural & Social Aspects of Commerce in Spices and Frankincense along the Old Silk Road.” This collaborative effort not only commemorates the rich commercial history between Oman and China but also revives the legacy of cultural and social exchanges that flourished along the ancient trade routes. The project was formally initiated through an agreement signed by Mr. Weilin Chen, President of CIE, and Dr. Hamdan Al Fazari, Vice Chancellor of Sohar University and Principal Investigator, in the presence of the research team – Prof. Rakesh Belwal and Dr. Ali Al Manei.
The book presents a layered historical narrative, spanning ancient maritime routes and highlighting the strategic significance of Omani ports in facilitating trade with China. It examines the socio-cultural dimensions of Sino-Omani relations, with notable chapters exploring the role of Oman’s trade hubs, personal accounts of Omani merchants in China, and the symbolic and economic value of frankincense and spices in bilateral commerce. The accompanying documentary brings these stories to life with vivid imagery and oral histories, offering an immersive journey through the Silk Road era. Dr. Hamdan Al Fazari extended heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Chen Weilin for his generous financial support, and congratulated the research team and all contributors within the university for their dedication to realizing this vision. This initiative stands as a testament to the spirit of academic cooperation and cultural diplomacy, and lays the foundations for continued collaboration under broader regional frameworks such as the Belt and Road Initiative.
