Sohar University continues to strengthen its commitment to innovation, empower national talents, and promote sustainability in alignment with national priorities to empower youth and activate the role of scientific research in achieving the goals of sustainable development and Oman Vision 2040. The university plays a pivotal role in transforming innovative ideas into applicable projects, supporting entrepreneurship, and creating an enabling environment for creativity and innovation across various fields.
As part of its ongoing efforts to support innovation and promote a culture of research and sustainability, Sohar University hosted the final evaluation event of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation for innovative projects competing to represent the Sultanate of Oman at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2025), which will take place in Malaysia at the end of May this year.
The university also hosted the Environmental Excellence Hackathon organized by the Environment Authority, aimed at encouraging young minds and innovators to present smart and sustainable environmental solutions to address the global environmental challenges. The hackathon saw widespread participation from university students, programmers, startups, and environmental enthusiasts, along with job seekers in this vital sector. Key themes included vegetation cover, wildlife, resource conservation, and pollution reduction—all in support of environmental innovation and sustainability.
As part of its commitment to cross-sectoral partnerships in fostering innovation and addressing challenges, Sohar University also successfully organized a dialogue event titled “Engineering Sustainability: A Student Dialogue.” The event brought together students, faculty members, researchers, industry representatives, and community members in a constructive discussion about how engineering can contribute to sustainable development goals, in line with Oman Vision 2040. This initiative was part of the university’s sustainability campaign under the theme “Education – Sustainability – Empowerment”, and aimed to promote dialogue, reflection, and commitment to sustainable practices. The event concluded with a collective pledge: “I pledge to integrate sustainability into my academic, professional, and personal choices, with respect for both people and the environment.” The university reaffirmed its commitment to empowering students to become sustainability leaders and aligning academic efforts with global goals.
In support of youth capacity-building and deeper engagement in economic and social sectors, Sohar University also hosted a training camp organized by the Youth Center and Sohar Port and Freezone Company. The camp aimed to empower youth through knowledge and skills development in logistics, contract management, and e-commerce. The event benefited nearly 160 participants and helped raise awareness about key sectors while encouraging youth to launch their own ventures. Sohar University’s participation in hosting several sessions of this camp reflects its ongoing commitment to community service and knowledge empowerment.
Commenting on these initiatives, Dr. Hamdan Al-Fazari, Chancellor of Sohar University, emphasized the university’s dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and supporting the potential of Omani youth. He noted that such initiatives offer valuable opportunities for innovators to develop their ideas and actively participate in international platforms. The university administration reaffirmed that organizing such events reflects the institution’s pioneering role in youth empowerment and its support for initiatives that drive development and innovation, helping to build a knowledge-based and sustainable society.
