Motivated by the example of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq’s state visit to the Netherlands, Sohar University boosts its collaboration with HEIs and companies from the Netherlands

Sohar University has announced that it will boost its collaboration with HEIs and companies from the Netherlands. This move has been motivated by the example of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq’s state visit to the Netherlands.

Sohar University has the strategic goal of extending its global profile and enhancing international collaboration in the areas of education, research and innovation. Its collaboration with the Netherlands started with the delivery of a joint project in collaboration with Delft University of Technology and Sohar Port to assess the feasibility of using deep sea water in industrial cooling requirements.

In a previous step, Vibers, a company from the Netherlands and Sohar University collaborated in the development of a new promotional product using bio-plastics to raise awareness of the use bio-plastics for environmental sustainability. The product developed from this collaboration was accepted by Sohar Port and it IOS now in use. The success of this project has opened the way for Sohar University to be a part of a large consortium that includes many HEIs and companies from both Oman and the Netherlands. This consortium is concentrating on the delivery of research projects, particularly the Blue Harvest project to deliver bio-based and nature-based sustainable solutions that counter climate change.

This week, Sohar University, with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Muscat, has aligned its efforts with other parties from the Netherlands and Oman to launch the “Research and Education Network in Energy and Water” (RENEW) consortium. This consortium will focus on prioritized projects in energy and water, with expected outcomes contributing to the development of new technologies and methodologies applicable to real-world problems. Additionally, the partnership aims to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness about sustainable practices in water and energy management, empowering the next generation with the skills, knowledge, and motivation needed to address environmental challenges and drive sustainable innovation.

In addition, Sohar University is planning to organize a business travel with participants from the industry to the Netherlands to explore more engagement especially with the Bemo Rail BV and other industrial companies in the Netherlands.

Dr Hamdan bin Sulaiman Al Fazari, the Vice Chancellor of SU, emphasized that “Sohar University is committed to expanding its collaboration with the Netherlands to deliver innovative and impactful solutions that will help Oman move forward in achieving its Vision 2040”. Dr Hamdan has also said that the University will not spare any possible efforts to move towards building its global profile through collaboration with national and international parties in the areas of quality education, research and innovation, and service to the community.
