How to Apply
Our Students

Diploma and Bachelor’s degree programs are offered in English Language Studies and English Language & Translation. Post-graduate students can study for a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL).

Students who choose to study for a Diploma, which is a two-year program, can return at a date of their choosing to complete a Bachelor’s degree. Program delivery is made as flexible as possible to accommodate students who are either in full or part-time employment or who have responsibilities that might keep them from attending full-time. Prospective students are advised to contact the Faculty to see how program delivery can be tailored to help them. Learning at the Faculty of Language Studies is more than simply a classroom experience. Technology is at the forefront of facilities provision, supported by a state-of-the-art Multimedia Laboratory. Active student engagement is fostered through our hosting of three, keynote events in the academic calendar: the annual Student Language Conference, Translation Day and the TESOL Symposium.

Assessment

The ELS Program uses a wide range of assessment and testing methods including Essay questions,

  • Short answer questions,
  • Matching questions,
  • Multiple-choice questions,
  • Comprehension questions,
  • Production questions,
  • Reasoning questions
  • Open-ended questions,

amongst others. The research projects are in the form of written projects. They are designed to revisit the knowledge, skills, and values obtained during the program. They provide students with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how they can integrate their cumulative learning for a practical application in the field of English Language Studies.

Master in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL)

The MA TESOL will provide you with the tools and resources you need to improve knowledge of various areas of applied linguistics as well as approaches to English language teaching that will facilitate better teaching practice. You will reflect upon and evaluate current issues and key trends in language learning and teaching in a range of contexts, and consider their application in classroom instruction, assessment, materials development and the English language curriculum. You'll also learn how to conduct your own research.

Within the degree, there is ample opportunity for students to tailor their own program in accordance with their professional and academic aspirations and experience. Individuals may select options, specialist modules, assignment topics and their thesis topic in accordance with their own particular interests or context.

Graduates who hold a Diploma or Degree awarded by the Faculty of Language Studies are liable to secure rewarding careers in a host of professions. They will, of course, be qualified to teach English and to act as translators and interpreters, which are in-demand professions that play a key role in Oman’s multi-national industrial and commercial sectors. However, graduates are also in a position to consider careers in Oman’s hugely expanding private health care services, the retail and tourism industries, and with the marketing and sales agencies that promote them.
