Her Excellency, Prof. Rahma Al Mahrouqiya, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, visited Sohar University on 10th of September. The visit was to discuss the vision and the plan of MoHERI for the higher education sector. Besides, plans for research and innovations were discussed.
Prof. Barry Winn, Vice Chancellor of Sohar University, gave an overview of the University's, academic quality, research, and SU future plans. The University is work closely with industries and businesses to produce graduates with entrepreneurial skills.
The Minister pointed out the importance of offering academic programs that meet the fourth industrial revolution, the market needs and the national economic diversification plans.
HE also affirmed the importance of PHIs aligning their plan with Oman Vision 2040, in improving the quality of education in the Sultanate. According to Oman vision 2040, 3 universities should be among the top 300 universities in the QS ranking. She emphasized the importance for universities to work together and liaise with the MoHERI. It is very significant for HEIs and the MoHERI to collaborate to chieve the integration between higher education, vocational training, research and innovation.
Her Excellency requested that PHEs focus on doctoral and postgraduate programs, capacity building, and the national cadres. This would help improve building research capacity in the institutions.
The Minister also met with representatives of the Student Advisory Council at the University. She pointed out the importance of the role of student advisory councils in HEIs. Students raised some issues and challenges and put forward some suggestions.
