Biography

Said Al-Amrani is an exceptional individual in the realm of applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, specialising in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). With his extensive practical teaching experience and a profound background in second language acquisition (SLA) and sociolinguistics, he has made substantial contributions to the field through his research and hands-on approach to teaching.

In recognition of his expertise and unwavering commitment to education, Al-Amrani was honoured with the esteemed Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2020 by UK Advance Higher Education. This prestigious fellowship serves as a testament to his continuous professional development and his ability to deliver impactful teaching and learning experiences.

Al-Amrani’s profound knowledge and proficiency have been recognised beyond his teaching domain, as he serves as a registered external reviewer for the esteemed Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA). In this capacity, he plays a pivotal role in evaluating the quality and standards of educational institutions in Oman, ensuring that they meet the highest benchmarks. Moreover, his contributions extend to the international stage, as he actively serves as a reviewer for several well-regarded Scopus-indexed journals, thereby upholding the integrity and rigour of academic research.

Throughout his tenure at Sohar University (SU), which commenced in 2006, Al-Amrani has assumed various key positions, including that of an English lecturer, program coordinator, and Assistant Dean. His invaluable experience has enabled him to significantly contribute to the development and enhancement of academic programs at SU. Notably, he played an instrumental role in reviewing multiple programs and spearheading the establishment of innovative ones, such as the MA in TESOL program.

Recognising his exceptional leadership qualities and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the academic community, Al-Amrani was elected as the Chairman of the SU Labour Union from 2016 to 2020. In this capacity, he skillfully harnessed the collective strength of the staff’s interests, striving to foster equality and fairness within SU, ultimately transforming it into a more inclusive and harmonious working environment. Al-Amrani’s entrepreneurial spirit is further exemplified by his role as the co-founder and Chair of the Sohar–IMT Institute Board of Directors from 2002 to 2019, where he actively contributed to the institution’s growth and development.

Al-Amrani’s exceptional educational background attests to his unwavering commitment to learning and perpetual professional growth. He successfully completed his PhD in second language acquisition (SLA) from the University of Queensland (Australia) in 2013, obtaining a profound understanding of the intricacies of language acquisition. Additionally, he earned a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Griffith University (Australia) in 2007, and a Bachelor of Education with an English major from SQU in 1998, further solidifying his expertise in the field. In 2020, he further augmented his qualifications by attaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Edge Hill (UK). These credentials are a testament to his steadfast pursuit of knowledge and his commitment to remaining at the forefront of his field.

To enrich his skill set and expand his professional horizons, Al-Amrani has actively participated in numerous professional development training programs. Notably, he has successfully completed programs focused on leading institutional change and innovation, as well as project management professionals (PMP), equipping him with the tools necessary to effectively contribute to organisational growth and development.

As a distinguished researcher, Al-Amrani has made significant contributions to the field through his extensive publications and presentations at renowned international conferences. His research papers have been published in prestigious Scopus-indexed journals, ensuring their quality and adherence to academic standards. Furthermore, he has shared his research findings at distinguished conferences such as the ALAA & ALANZ International Conference in 2011 in Australia and the RELC International Conferences in 2014 and 2016 in Singapore.

Al-Amrani’s research interests span a broad spectrum, encompassing various aspects of SLA, sociolinguistics, technology-enhanced learning, and active learning in higher education. Notably, he has spearheaded projects focused on documenting endangered spoken languages in Oman, thereby safeguarding cultural heritage, and promoting Omani learners’ willingness to communicate in English. Through his research, Al-Amrani strives to advance the understanding of language acquisition processes and develop effective strategies that facilitate language teaching and learning.
